Tasmania

Where would you buy land to save yourself?

⏭️ “In Tasmania. It is south enough not to suffer from extreme temperatures. It has abundant freshwater reserves, is democratically governed, and there are no predators of humans living there. It’s not too small, but it’s an island, so it’s easy to defend. Because you will have to defend yourself, believe me.” ⏮️

This is the question asked by author Paolo Giordano in his novel “Tasmania”, alluding to the climate crisis and the social unrest to be expected as a result.

Otherwise, the novel has very little to do with Tasmania, but the interview on pages 131/132 is a key scene from which the book’s title emerges.

It tells the story of an Italian journalist who loses control of his life and is looking for a new future. To escape his own crisis, he becomes an expert on global crises and challenges such as climate change, international terrorism and the nuclear threat.

I myself traveled to Tasmania in 2024 together with my wife. Beautiful and easily accessible from Melbourne or Sydney. And there is good wine there. An important addition.

During the trip, in the Australian midsummer, my wife and I had discussed travel destinations. If we had to or wanted to turn our backs on Germany, Tasmania would be our preferred immigration destination.

A synchronicity of thoughts?

And yet another one on page 27 of the novel, which resonates strongly with me.

“In Collapse, Jared Diamond depicts a kind of paradox. He shows how the civilizations that we take for granted are progressing to increasing prosperity sometimes develop in the opposite sense, unconsciously creating the conditions for their end.”

Diamond also shows examples of societies that have been able to ensure their survival through clever reactions to change.

“Ways out of the crisis, recommendations from practice.” I have already written about this myself. In a contribution in the anthology “Zukunft” at GABAL e.V.

May the frog jump out of the increasingly hot water before it is too late. My topic. Forward-looking, thinking in scenarios, decisive, optimistic.

From my point of view, dealing with crises has become a core competence necessity for small and large companies, start-ups and the self-employed, also in the private sector. And it is becoming more and more important. Keywords: pandemic, climate crisis, geopolitics.

➡️ Or how do you see that?
