They do exist, these beautifully located restaurants. We, my family and I, are in Caberita, in the west of Sydney on one of the many Coastal Walks. Before the ferry takes us back to the center, we enjoy the view and the excellent lunch.
It’s a late lunch and we already have a few kilometers in our legs. It’s just fantastic here, for the four of us. The view of the sea, the harbour and the sun warms us in these Australian winter days. Enjoying the food with all the senses is always the goal.
What does the kitchen say? The answer to this question is part of my holistic fitness strategy. A few principles have developed.
✳️ Everything in moderation and avoid waste
What is on the plate is eaten. My grandparents would be happy. The rule: Only take as much as you want to eat and only what you like! In order not to get into the embarrassment of leaving food on the plate in the first place.
✳️ A balanced diet
Local and seasonal food is preferred. Mediterranean by the sea, lentil stew after a hike in the Black Forest or on the Swabian Alb. Vegetarian if possible to reduce meat consumption. And drink plenty of water or unsweetened tea. Definitely without sugar.
✳️ Movement is the be-all and end-all
Numbers, data, facts: That means controlling my weight and my standardised mileage. Sports or sportive activities, if possible daily and outdoors in nature.
✳️ And finally, the golden rule
Eat like an emperor in the morning, like a nobleman at noon, and like a beggar in the evening (or not at all). I can still hear this sentence from my paternal grandfather in my ears today. How true, how true.
I’m a bon vivant, someone once confirmed to me. Agreed.
Moments of enjoyment in and around everyday work are important, and to be aware of these moments and to feel them with your senses. I experiment with it and am always successful when they, these moments of pleasure, conform to my strategy. That is the prerequisite.
