Meeting the Authors

It was like a podcast without a microphone and no recording. Private time with the authors of two books. Bestselling books.

A real gift to meet Minette Norman and Karolin Helbig on Tuesday together on their tour through Germany and other parts of Europe.

„Your life must have changed after publishing your Playbook on Psychological Safety?“, was my key question to both of them, based on my observations of their respective recent LinkedIn posts.

And with that question we were diving into our conversation. Views, values, experiences. And as a windfall profit, I gained some insights for my role as a lecturer for the subject “Business Ethics and Sustainability”.

I prefer interactive formats and small workshops, whether on site or virtually.
What is it, that the students feel safe to participate and feel encouraged to do so? We touched a few of my practices during our conversation and put some analysing thoughts behind it.

✳️ Starting a lecture day with showing the question, that I will ask at the end of the same lecture day. Just to not surprise the students and set the expectations for the learning progress right at the beginning.

✳️ Allowing everyone to reply to a question „Oh, that’s a good question!“ meaning, that at this moment there is no answer and / or it needs some additional research before we can answer it. That builds on the assumption, that nobody knows it all. And that includes me, the lecturer.

✳️ Respect all voices by introducing the ritual of a feedback session at the end of a lecture with everyone getting heard.

Just to name a few

At this Tuesday evening I met Minette for the first time in person and with Karolin, it was a reunion. An evening to celebrate and to enjoy. Thank you both for your time and the inspirational conversation.
