In my third Semester now

The most efficient way to learn is to pass on what you have learned yourself as a teacher.

As a lecturer for the subject “Business Ethics and Sustainability” at the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University at the Faculty of Business Science and Management, I am now entering my third semester.

I have experienced much of my teaching subject myself in my corporate professional life and I am now able to deepen much of it with the latest theoretical findings. Experienced and uncharted territory go hand in hand.

I learn for myself and pass on the newly learned knowledge to the students together with my practical experience. And that’s an iterative process. With potential for improvement, semester after semester.

My goals are defined. To the students, I want …

✳️ … to convey the basic ideas behind the term business ethics and them to deal with corresponding case studies from practice.

✳️ … them to further develop the basic understanding of the topic of sustainability and, quite critically, how sustainability management is implemented in companies.

✳️ … them to be prepared for moral and ethical action as future leaders.

With the four lecture hours en bloc per week, interactive formats and small workshops can be easily implemented, whether on site or virtually.

And on the topic of “sustainability management”, I involved dialogue discussions for the first time last semester. The students research what the companies in the immediate vicinity publish on the topic, create questionnaires from it and interested companies are available to answer questions.

Last semester, Ralf Feyrer from Groz-Beckert at Albstadt and Julian Eilers from Bizerba at Balingen were willing to do so. And those were inspiring and encouraging discussions with insights for both sides, yes, for both sides!

A thank you to the participating students and to the two companies.

➡ And how do you see that? Do you have any ideas on how we can make progress together as a society on the topic of sustainability?

My name is Bernd Scharbert and I support leaders with my experience from over 30 years of leadership experience in the corporate world. Incidentally, not only on the topic of sustainability, but also on aspects of intercultural leadership.
