Karaoke recently and a surprise question: What was your first single that belonged to you? Am I honest or am I thinking of a title that I like to sing and can sing well?
My youngest uncle had good relations with an ice cream parlor. And there was a jukebox there. You know, such a device that can automatically change the records. And from time to time the singles were exchanged. So in my pre-teenage years, I got my first record, a used one, from my uncle.
Adamo, “Ein kleines Glück“ (transl.: A little bit of happiness).
My gosh. For a long time not heard and forgotten the lyrics. “A little bit of happiness, becomes big one day. If you can only wait, then it will fall into your lap.” You can research the rest yourself, if you feel like it.
That makes me a bit thoughtful. Because the small moments of happiness actually play a big role in my life.
The jukebox is like a playlist in the analogue age. The good thing about it is that it can be easily topped up with alternative records. Over the years, my taste in music developed. And in the 70s, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and Bob Marley dominated my record shelf.
Today I think of Taylor Swift: She is part of my business ethics lecture. With students of the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University, we discuss a song by her as part of the “Diversity & Inclusion” thematic block. It is about the double standards faced by men and women and is an ode to equality.
I’ve experienced the hype around Taylor Swift in both Sydney and Singapore, where – synchronicity of events – I’ve been on site at her concerts, but haven’t been there yet. Impressive. Maybe I should plan that and get “The Man” in my jukebox.
➡️ What songs are played in your “jukebox” today that connect the generations?
