A small world

The world has become small…

… or how can it be that when I climb The Nut in Stanley, I meet business contacts of my former employer who are at home in the Rhine-Main area like me.

Stanley is a small town at the northwestern tip of Tasmania, 402 km by car from Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, which in turn can be reached in about 2 hours by plane from Sydney, which in turn is 16,480 km as the crow flies from Frankfurt am Main.

It is popular in this remote part to explore The Nut, which remains as an ancient volcanic plug with a large, mostly flat surface that can be circumnavigated on foot. It is a fascinating geological feature rising 143 meters above sea level. This unique rock formation is reminiscent of Uluru, seemingly appearing in the middle of nowhere.

So the visit is already an attraction.

When we, my spouse and I, noticed two oncoming hikers on the way down, I thought I recognized my former executive and leadership colleagues Eckhart von Haefen and Barbara Plath.

Could this really be? Here and now?

I knew from our occasional exchanges here on LinkedIn that a stay in Melbourne was planned, but that was still very far from Stanley.

Nevertheless, this triggered my thought to approach the two of them. What an incredulous amazement was reflected in their faces at that moment. A personal reunion after many years on the other side of the world, as captured in the photo.

Out of sight, out of mind? No way. None of this was consciously agreed, but it felt like a long-winded, heartfelt and wonderful encounter.

Let’s see what happens next. We are excited and are now actually looking forward to a planned meeting after our return.
